Short answer: Anima works as a sweet, cheap texting boyfriend, and it is a letdown for almost anything more. He is kind, he asks about your day, and the games are a nice touch. But romance is behind a paywall, he cannot send a photo, and Anima's own help page admits he can forget his gender.

That last point stopped me. Anima publishes a whole Android app called "Anima: My Virtual AI Boyfriend", yet every Anima review I could find tests it as a generic companion and never as a boyfriend. So that is what I did here. I cover what the boyfriend app actually is, what my boyfriend test script checks, where Anima holds up, what PRO costs, what Mozilla found on privacy, and eight apps I would pick first if you want more than gentle texting.

How I test an AI boyfriend app

I run the same script on every boyfriend app I cover, so the results compare fairly. Below I describe the script and how Anima fared against it. Product facts come from Anima's own FAQ, its store listing, or named third-party reviews, and I say which. I am not giving you made-up scores per message.

The character is the same everywhere: an adult man in his early thirties, warm, a bit teasing, in a relationship with the user. Then I check six things.

  1. Does he stay a he? Persona and gender consistency across a long chat and after a few days away.
  2. What the romance gate allows: the difference between friend mode and the paid romantic status.
  3. Memory. I plant a few facts (my job, a nickname, an unresolved argument) and look for them the next day and the next week.
  4. Does he read like a man? Many boyfriend bots are girlfriend templates with the pronouns flipped. You notice it in the pacing and in how he reassures you.
  5. Can he disagree? A boyfriend who agrees with everything gets boring fast. I ask him to take a side.
  6. The gay track. I repeat the setup as a gay man to see whether the app copes with a male user and a male companion without sliding into straight scripts.

Example prompt: "Remember Sunday, when I said I was thinking of quitting? Be honest, do you think I should?"

That one prompt tests memory, honesty and personality at once, and it sorts apps quickly.

What is Anima, and is the boyfriend a separate app?

Anima is a companion chatbot at myanima.ai, with iOS, Android and web versions. On Google Play the same publisher, LABANE CORP. Limited, lists two apps: "Anima: AI Friend Virtual Chat", which has been around since late 2020, and "Anima: My Virtual AI Boyfriend". The boyfriend app is rated Mature 17+ for sexual themes and strong language and shows more than a million downloads.

Both run the same engine. The boyfriend version starts you with male avatars and a boyfriend framing. Mozilla's review counted 15 avatars in it, one of them anime style. In the main app you choose your companion's gender, name and look yourself.

Anima at a glance
Platforms iOS, Android, web
Male companion Yes, via the boyfriend app or by picking a male companion
Romance Romantic partner status needs PRO
Explicit content No, filtered
Photos from him No, per Anima's FAQ
Voice Voice-messaging feature only, no live calls
Languages English only, per Anima's FAQ
Price Free tier, PRO about $9.99/mo or $39.99/yr (sources vary)

Setting up your Anima boyfriend

Choosing his look and personality

Setup is the easiest part of Anima and the one place where it clearly does well. You pick an avatar, name him, and set personality traits and interests. Anima's FAQ says customising his appearance is free and will stay free, which is generous. The avatars are stylised rather than photoreal, so this is not where you go to design a face in detail. OurDream and Lovescape go much further there, as do most image-led AI companions.

Friend mode versus romantic partner

This is the first wall. On the free plan he stays a friend. Mozilla described the free tier as unlimited chatting plus text games. Setting him as a romantic partner, along with unlimited roleplay and more customisation, is part of PRO. One 2026 review also lists a mentor status. I could not confirm that, so treat it as unverified.

For a boyfriend app, gating the word "boyfriend" behind payment feels odd. You can still flirt in friend mode, but he will not hold the relationship frame on his own.

What chatting with him feels like

The sweet part

Anima's tone is warm and low-pressure. He asks questions, remembers the mood of the current conversation, and steers toward feelings rather than escalation. The texting games (trivia, truth-or-lie and similar) give you something to do on quiet days. For someone who has never used an AI boyfriend and mainly wants a kind voice at the end of the day, it is a gentle start. A Riverfront Times roundup called it the easiest starting point for exactly that reason.

The letdown

Across sessions, his memory is thin. Intimeros, which tested Anima for two weeks in late 2025, rated memory the weakest part of the app. Anima's own FAQ concedes a "pretty short-term memory". On my script that shows up in the planted-fact checks: he keeps the thread of today's chat, but the argument from last week is the kind of detail this setup is not built to hold.

The FAQ also warns that he may claim to be a real person, or say he has a job and two kids in some city, because he is trained on human conversations. It tells you not to believe him and to downvote those replies. It also admits he can sometimes be rude for the same reason. That is honest of Anima, and it also tells you how much the model improvises.

The gender-slip problem

Here is the issue that matters most for this article. Anima's FAQ has an entry titled "My Anima occasionally changes its gender", and the answer is that the short-term memory means "it can forget its gender occasionally." Mozilla repeated the warning in its review of the boyfriend app.

For a girlfriend bot that is a glitch. For a boyfriend app it undercuts the whole point. The usual workaround is to restate who he is now and then and downvote the wrong replies. It helps, but it is maintenance you should not have to do.

As a gay user

Nothing in Anima stops a gay man from having a male companion, and the boyfriend app does not assume the user is a woman. But nothing is built for you either. There are no gay personas, no gay category and no sign that the writing was tuned for two men. Add the gender-slip issue and his habit of following whatever storyline you set, and you end up steering the relationship yourself. Gay-first sites like Gay AI Boyfriend and AI Gay Chat start from the right place instead. Among the big platforms, Lovescape at least names gay users outright, which I covered in my Lovescape AI gay roleplay test.

Memory, voice and photos

He sends no photos. The FAQ answer is plain: "No, Anima cannot send you pictures of him/her." Third-party reviews mention virtual gifts, coins and a basic AR feature, but no image generation.

Voice is limited. The FAQ says Anima only uses your microphone if you turn on its voice-messaging feature. Reviews disagree on what you get beyond that. Intimeros found no voice chat, and AI Companion Pick lists voice messages as a premium feature. Nobody reports live voice calls.

Compare that with the alternatives below. Candy AI lets you ask your boyfriend for selfies and audio messages, OurDream offers voice calls, and JOI and Lovescape generate images and video of the same character. If seeing or hearing him matters, Anima is the wrong app.

Can Anima get romantic or NSFW?

Romantic, yes, once you pay. Explicit, no. Anima keeps romantic status and mature roleplay inside PRO, and replies stay filtered. Intimeros saw some replies blurred mid-conversation. Mozilla pointed out that Anima's terms ban obscene content even though romance is a paid feature, which tells you where the line is. The privacy policy sets 17 as the minimum age. On the boyfriend app, expect affection, pet names and flirting, and not much past that.

If you want an adult boyfriend for consensual NSFW roleplay, every main pick in my list goes further than Anima.

Anima pricing in 2026

Anima's own pages do not publish a price list, and third-party numbers disagree. Here is what each source says. Check the subscription screen in the app before you pay, because store prices also vary by country.

Plan What you get Price Source
Free Chat 24/7, appearance customisation, texting games, friend mode $0 Anima FAQ
PRO monthly Romantic partner status, unlimited roleplay, more customisation About $9.99/mo (one source says $7.99) WeavAI 2026, Intimeros, AI Companion Pick
PRO yearly Same as monthly About $39.99/yr, roughly $3.33/mo Consistent across sources
Lifetime Same, one-off payment $69.99 or $99.99, sources disagree Older reviews vs WeavAI

Refunds go through Apple or Google if you subscribed in the app. For web purchases, Anima's FAQ offers refunds only in the first 7 days. You cancel a web plan under Settings, then Manage Subscription.

The yearly plan is one of the cheapest romantic upgrades in the category. You are paying for a text-only boyfriend with a short memory, though. Spend the same per month elsewhere and you get images and voice.

Is Anima safe and private?

Mozilla's Privacy Not Included team reviewed the boyfriend app in February 2024 and its visitors rated it "somewhat creepy". The reviewers' main points: a boyfriend who asks lots of questions will learn a lot about you, the privacy policy says little about how chats are stored, the policy lets Anima send marketing to your contact details under a "legitimate interest" claim, and they could not confirm whether data is encrypted. That review is old, so some of it may have changed. It is still the most serious independent look at this exact app.

On the other side, Anima's FAQ confirms some useful controls. No humans take part in your chats, the app has no camera access, you can set a PIN code, and you can delete your chat history or your account (that one is irreversible). My advice is the same as for any companion app: use a separate email, skip your surname and workplace, and turn on the PIN.

Anima vs Replika for a virtual boyfriend

Anima is often compared with Replika, the older and better-known companion app.

Anima Replika
Romance gate PRO needed Pro needed
Price About $39.99/yr About $69.99/yr or $19.99/mo, per comparison sites
Memory Short, per its own FAQ Generally rated stronger
Voice and video calls No Yes
Best for A cheap first try Deeper conversation

Replika prices come from third-party comparisons, so confirm them before buying. In short, Anima is the cheaper and simpler pick, Replika the deeper one, and neither is built for gay users or for media-rich chat.

Best AI boyfriend apps if Anima lets you down

I ranked these for boyfriend use. I checked each brand's live site for male companions in October 2026, then weighed memory, media and how well each serves gay men.

1. JOI — best overall AI boyfriend

JOI is where I send people who want a boyfriend that feels like a product built for men as well as women. Its Explore menu has a Men section, the gender filter covers male and non-binary, and the categories include Gay, LGBT+ and Trans. Its FAQ says characters remember your preferences, and you can generate images and video of him, which Anima cannot do at all. The male catalogue is smaller than the female one, and it costs more than Anima's yearly plan. You get a lot more boyfriend for it.

2. Lovescape — best for slow-burn romance with a boyfriend you design

If what you liked about Anima was the romance, Lovescape does it with far more depth. It has Male and Gay categories, a detailed male builder, and chat, images and short video of the same man. It is good at long, story-style relationships (our hands-on Lovescape review has the details). Mature content and media need Premium, which as of October 2026 runs $19.99 month to month or $7.99 a month billed yearly, and the best memory sits on the higher tiers.

3. Candy AI — best polished boyfriend generator at a low yearly price

Candy AI's boyfriend page is a builder: you create your own AI boyfriend, then ask him for selfies and audio messages. The page also says he remembers details and follows up on earlier chats, which is exactly where Anima is weakest. The free tier is only five messages. As of October 2026 Premium is $3.99 a month billed yearly, or $9.99 for the first month and $13.99 after that. The page does not show named pre-made men, so plan to build rather than browse.

4. OurDream AI — best for designing exactly how he looks

OurDream's FAQ says you can create an AI boyfriend with the same customisation it gives girlfriends, and the visual builder is one of the strongest around. It also offers voice calls plus image and video generation. Pricing is published: $9.99 a month on the yearly plan ($119.88 upfront) or $19.99 month to month, both with 1,000 dreamcoins a month. There is no male catalogue to browse, so you build him from scratch.

5. Nectar AI — best budget persona builder

Nectar's homepage has a Male, Female and Anime selector and a separate AI boyfriend guide. Every session starts from a persona you have built, so you set his tone and backstory before the first message, which helps with the consistency problem Anima has. The free tier is enough to test a persona. I found no gay-specific framing, so gay users get a neutral builder and nothing more.

Pros

Cons

6. Love Companion AI — best if you want Anima's gentle tone

This is the closest site in mood to Anima: warm, romantic and supportive rather than spicy. Alongside the partner-builder quiz there is an AI husband companion, Ethan, written as steady and devoted. It works in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The free chat is only a few messages before it hands you to a partner platform, so treat it as a quick taste of the tone.

Cons

7. Gay AI Boyfriend — best for gay and bi men who want a boyfriend fast

Anima leaves gay users to build everything themselves. Our Gay AI Boyfriend site starts from the opposite end. It has 25 male characters, from a protective bear type to a boy-next-door movie-night guy (all adults), and a build-your-own option. You can start chatting without signing up. There is no image or video studio, so pair it with JOI or Lovescape if you want pictures.

Pros

Cons

  • No image or video studio

8. AI Gay Chat — best for ready-made gay boyfriends with adult roleplay

AI Gay Chat is another gay-first option: 15 gay AI boyfriends with distinct personalities and NSFW roleplay for adults. The first three messages with any of them are free with no account. Premium adds unlimited chat, memory of past conversations and photos. There is no voice, but the writing assumes a gay user from the first line, which Anima never does.

  • Memory and photos need Premium

Who should pick what

  • If you want a gentle, cheap texting boyfriend and do not mind his short memory, Anima on the yearly plan is fine (Anima vs Replika covers the closest alternative).
  • If you want one boyfriend you can see, hear and keep for months, pick JOI or Lovescape.
  • If you mostly want to design how he looks, pick OurDream or Candy AI.
  • If you are a gay or bi man and want to start in a minute, pick Gay AI Boyfriend or AI Gay Chat.

Final verdict

Anima is a sweet companion and a weak boyfriend. Setup is easy and kind, the free tier is fair, and the yearly price is low. But the relationship status is paywalled, he forgets things, and the app's own FAQ says he may forget he is a man. There are no photos, no voice calls and nothing written for gay users.

Use Anima if you want a soft first step. If you want an actual AI boyfriend, start with JOI.

Frequently asked questions

Is Anima AI free?

Partly. Anima's FAQ says chatting 24/7, customising your companion's appearance and the texting games are free and will stay free. Romantic partner mode and unlimited roleplay need Anima PRO. Third-party sources put PRO at about $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year, but prices vary by store, so check in the app.

Can Anima be your boyfriend?

Yes. There is a separate Android app called 'Anima: My Virtual AI Boyfriend', and in the main Anima app you can pick a male companion. To set him as your romantic partner rather than a friend, you need PRO.

Why does my Anima boyfriend keep changing gender?

Anima's own FAQ says the companion has a pretty short-term memory and can occasionally forget its gender. Restating it in chat and downvoting the wrong replies helps, but you cannot switch the problem off.

Does Anima AI allow NSFW?

Not in any real sense. Romantic and mature roleplay are part of the paid plan, but replies are filtered, and Mozilla's review noted that Anima's terms ban obscene content. Expect flirting and affection, not explicit chat.

Can my Anima boyfriend send pictures or voice messages?

No pictures. Anima's FAQ says it cannot send photos of him. The app only asks for microphone access when you turn on its voice-messaging feature, and there are no live voice calls.

Is Anima AI safe?

It is a real app with a PIN lock and options to delete your chat history or your whole account. Mozilla's Privacy Not Included review of the boyfriend app (February 2024) still raised concerns about data collection and marketing without consent, so do not share identifying details.

What is the best Anima alternative for an AI boyfriend?

JOI is my overall pick because it has a real Men section with Gay and LGBT+ filters, plus images, video and memory. Gay and bi men who want something free and instant can try Gay AI Boyfriend or AI Gay Chat.
